Leonardo DiCaprio, Julian Moore, and Greta Lee were among the famous names who were overlooked for the 2024 Oscar nominations, disappointing fans.
The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were revealed on January 23, 2024. The acting categories were notable for having ten first-time candidates, including Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall).
However, numerous performers who received critical acclaim were left out of the top five. According to People, Leonardo DiCaprio’s absence from the Best Actor category for his work in Killers of the Flower Moon has sparked outrage among certain admirers.
One social media user remarked, “I’m incredibly surprised that Leonardo DiCaprio was rejected at the Oscars. His performance in Killers of the Flower Moon was superior to any of his other Oscar-winning performances.”
According to Vanity Fair, DiCaprio’s absence was due to the film’s marketing staff being more focused on Lily Gladstone’s Oscar campaign than his own. According to Variety, DiCaprio was not considered a favorite for an Oscar consideration after missing out on a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination on January 10.
“DiCaprio has missed out on an Oscar before. Perhaps some voters were dissatisfied with his demeanor, or DiCaprio was a victim of a competitive field,” Variety said.
The five candidates for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).
In the film, DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, a crucial character. Vanity Fair applauded DiCaprio’s performance, stating that he had several passages that “set the stage” for his co-star, Lily Gladstone, to shine. The actor demonstrated his acting abilities with his motions and eyes. Ernest’s character undergoes a dramatic psychological metamorphosis, from a heroic hero returning to Oklahoma after the Civil heroic to a vulnerable husband incapable of protecting his wife.
Fantasia Barrino and Taraji P. Henson (The Color Purple) are two more actors who were expected to be nominated but were left out of the final round, like DiCaprio. Danielle Brooks got the film’s lone nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Critics praised Penelope Cruz’s performance in Ferrari (2023), however she was left out of the Best Supporting Actress nominations. Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman of May December were also absent from the acting categories, despite receiving recognition at various awards ceremonies before to the Oscars.
Past Lives garnered nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, however Greta Lee did not advance to the Best Actress round. In addition, are you there, God? Many viewers gave It’s Me, Margaret good reviews, however Rachel McAdams was not nominated for Best Supporting Actress or Best Adapted Screenplay.
Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), who was honored with a plaque on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 8, missed out on the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, although his co-actor Mark Ruffalo was nominated in the same category.
The films Saltburn, Air, All of Us Strangers, Priscilla, and Origin received no nominations. Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City was named one of the 25 finest films of 2023 by the cinema website IndieWire, but it did not advance to the final round.
